1978 Fender Jazz – not my usual sort of vintage bass as it’s been refinished in white and had the pickups replaced with EMG’s (9v battery) and all the pots changed too. The pots now date to 1984/5 so I’m guessing this is when the EMG’s were put in, and probably when the refinish was done as well.
Other than that (!) it’s original and has some good points – truss rod working well and turning smoothly, neck arrow straight, plays very well, original pick guard with serial number sticker on the underside (which matches the one on the headstock), no additional routs in the body, and I have been able to identify the body as original as I’ve removed some of the refinish in the neck pocket which showed the original stamps etc. It was quite exciting actually…
I’ve done a lot of sorting out, setting up, and general fettling.
Also, it was originally Olympic white as the original coat is still underneath – it has aged to that lovely creamy colour too, such a shame about the refinish, but I managed to expose a decent amount of the original under the bridge so it might be possible to remove all of it, not something I’d want to attempt though, too much of a labour of love, but this has been done on other basses.
It also has the original brass earthing plates under the pickups.
3-bolt neck, with micro tilt adjuster all working well. The set up on it was really bad as the EMG’s are taller than standard pickups and with all the old foam underneath they had to tilt the neck up a lot so the strings missed the pickups, which meant the saddles were very high. Now all sorted and playing extremely well. Not stupidly heavy either for the era – but still 11lbs
Maple neck with binding and pearl block inlays, lovely to play and a great tone. I think the vintage EMG’s work really well with it….
