1981 Fender Precision bass in brown sunburst SOLD - click on picture to open gallery

I’ve owned this bass before, back in 2009, and it’s a really good instrument so was happy to be able to get it back again.
It’s on a “S9” serial number but I knew it was from 1981. In that year Fender offered 3 new finishes – Sienna Sunburst, Cherry Sunburst and Brown Sunburst. Sienna and Cherry were by far the most popular and you do see these fairly often. Less common is the Brown Sunburst – I’ve only seen one other. The effect is quite subtle, at first glance it could just be regular sunburst, but the brown is noticeable when you look for it.
This is a lovely looking bass in great condition. All 100% original. Pots date to 1981, soldering untouched, serial number sticker in the neck pocket which matches the one on the headstock and all as it should be. The body is particularly good, and the neck has a few marks on the fingerboard but the back is almost perfect. All in all, a really good vintage Precision in a rare colour.
The person I sold it to back in 2009 had the bass re-fretted by Mansons of Exeter (They make instruments for Muse and John-Paul Jones) so it’s a really good job, as you would expect. It didn’t actually need re-fretting but he was a perfectionist and wanted everything 100% which it is now.
The pickguard had a crack near the jack socket which is visible if you look for it, but it’s been professionally repaired so not an issue.
It comes set up with a set of flatwounds, the chrome bridge cover, and a new black tolex oblong hard case. It’s lovely to play, nice low action and has a great sound – a fantastic bass.
