I have this vintage Epiphone Rivoli bass from 1964.
It’s not really a collectors piece, but wow, it’s perfect for a player. It’s been modified in the past to make it more playable and more relevant for a contemporary bassist.
It’s had an extra Jazz pick up added which is brilliant, as it makes this bass so much more versatile than standard when you had just the neck humbucker, which from its position on the instrument, would only give a small range of similar bass tones.
With the Jazz installed you can blend the 2 as you would normally. If you want the “old school” sound then no problem, just use the neck pickup.
Each pickup has its own Vol/tone/jack socket, so to blend easily you’d need to use something like an EBS Micro bass pedal, which is included with the bass. From this pedal you can use either pick up or both together.
It really sounds great, very easy to play being 30″ short scale, and the neck is straight and comfortable.
This bass has obviously been used a lot in the past, a good sign in many ways, and has had the tuners changed to Schaller ones (quite a while ago I expect, as they’re marked “Made in W. Germany) Also, some of the frets are quite worn BUT it still plays perfectly. The binding on the back edge of the body has come away in two places, not unusual, but doesn’t affect anything and not something that would cause any problems.
I suspect the neck pickup might not be original.
