Here’s a cool bass.
It’s a Fender Jazz Bass Special. In 1985 Fender Japan started producing the Jazz Bass Special. It’s the PJ555 model.
The serial numbers of these started with E5 for 1985. Duff Mckagan of GNR fame bought a 1985 Jazz special at the Sunset Guitar Center in 1986 when they received their first $10,000 record advance.
These Jazz Specials are all he used for 99% of GNR from 1986-1997. He has continued to use these models off and on ever since.
They were made in a variety of colours, and some had a plain maple wood neck. The ones to have is the one Duff had – Pearl white with the gloss black neck and headstock – super cool.
The earliest ones had the large pickup pole pieces – they changed after 1987.
This example is very good. A few dings on the Pearl body (now aged to yellow in patches – looks amazing) and a couple on the neck. Nothing bad though. Usual small lacquer cracks.
The neck is lovely, very slim, and the nut is between a P and a J – feels great to play. The frets are barely marked. All original and sounds great. Has 2 x volumes and a TBX tone control, plus 3 way selector switch.
The 3 x knobs have all lost their “F” logo tops and one has lost the rubber band as well. It’s a shame because they’re expensive to buy if you can find any. A perfect part for someone to get 3D printed I always think….
Fender released a MIM Duff McKagen signature model as well, nice, but this original one is the one to have. Better investment than money in the bank any day.
As usual I’ve struggled to capture the true colour – probably the best shot is the one on the scales…..
Comes with a good hard case.
